The Cornoavirus has put personal hygiene in the spotlight like never before. Regular hand washing as well as the use of hand sanitizers are being promoted as an effective means to kill the virus and prevent the spread of the disease.
However, as a result of the greater demand, supply has been put under pressure. The prices of hand sanitizer have therefore increased and there is often a shortage in stock decreasing availability.
Making bulk hand sanitizer is a cost effective means for ensuring sufficient amounts of the product for personal use as well as for businesses.
How To Make Bulk Hand Sanitizer
There are two important elements to hand sanitizer – the first is the disinfecting properties and the second is the protection that it offers the skin. For Coronavirus, an alcohol concentration of a minimum of 60% is recommended to eliminate the virus.
This makes it necessary to start with rubbing or isopropyl alcohol that has a concentration of more than 90% in order to ensure that the hand sanitizer has the required 60% alcohol concentration once it has been diluted with other ingredients. The 60% concentration has become the standard for hand sanitizers and the WHO (World Health Organization) has provided 2 formulations for making hand sanitizer in bulk.
Hand Sanitizer Gel
The hand sanitizer gel requires a ratio of 3:1 – 99% rubbing alcohol:aloe vera gel. The alcohol is the active ingredient in the sanitizer to effectively eliminate microbes like the Coronavirus. The Aloe Vera Gel will protect the skin from the harshness of the alcohol.
Between 8-10 drops of essential oils can be added to the formula to cover the harsh odor of the alcohol. However this is entirely optional. The 3:1 ratio allows as much or as little hand sanitizer to be made to meet bulk or personal requirements.
Simply mix the ingredients together in a bowl with a whisk and pour into bottles (pump dispenser bottles or squeeze bottles are ideal) for use or storage. Make sure that all implements and bottles used are sterilized by steaming or boiling before using them to make the hand sanitizer.
Hand Sanitizer Spray
The WHO recipe for bulk spray hand sanitizer is just as simple and easy to make although it has a couple more ingredients:
- 1 cup 99% isopropyl alcohol
- 1 tablespoon 3% hydrogen peroxide
- 1 teaspoon 98% glycerin
- 1/4 cup, 1 tablespoon and 1 teaspoon distilled water or cooled boiled water.
Place the hydrogen peroxide and glycerin in a sterilized bowl and mix with a sterilized whisk. Add the alcohol and mix and lastly add the water and whisk. Pour the liquid into spray bottles for immediate use or other sealable containers for storage. It is recommended to use a bowl with a spout or use a sterilized funnel to pour the liquid into the bottles or storage containers. The recipe can be doubled as many times as needed to meet specific requirements for bulk hand sanitizer.
- Note! Vodka or any other hard tack alcohol is not effective to eliminate the Coronavirus but can be used to make hand sanitizers that have a low alcohol concentration for other sterilization and disinfectant purposes.
